In 1875, Smith & Wesson responded to the rising popularity of firearms that utilized self-contained metallic cartridges by creating the Model 3 revolver. The pistol's top-break design was soon recognized by U.S. Army Major George Schofield, who made modifications to meet the cavalry's needs. Smith & Wesson incorporated those changes, and the Model 3 was renamed "The Schofield Revolver." Despite its advantages, it was overshadowed by the Colt Single Action Army in popularity with the U.S. Army. However, the Russian Government adopted the Model 3, with the Czar ordering 41,000 units.
The reputation of the Schofield Model 3 extended beyond military use and quickly found its way into the hands of civilians, lawmen, and outlaws alike. Notorious outlaw Jesse James was known to carry a Schofield for much of his criminal career and ironically was killed with one. Another famous user of the Model 3 Schofield was the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, who used one to great success during the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
Uberti's Model 3 revolvers are authentic reproductions of the original down to the last detail. These revolvers feature the top-break design, spent case extractors, and hardwood grips, ensuring that shooters can experience the same classic style and feel of the original Schofield Revolver.
